ATLANTA - After a superb senior season on the grid iron, Jonathan Hammond has brought in yet another award: the AJC Class-A Private Football All-State Defensive Player of the Year, released on Jan. 2.
"Thanks to the AJC for selecting me to the All-State Team and as Defensive Player of the Year for Class-A Private," Hammond said on social media. "Special thanks to my coaches for all the effort and time they have put into making me who I am today!"
Hammond led Mount Vernon's defense with a whopping 94.5 tackles for the 2019 season.
He also assisted in 18 tackles, racked up 19 take-downs for a loss and picked up 5.5 sacks as well.
"We are very proud of Jonathan and this tremendous honor," Head Coach Wayne Dabbs said. "Jonathan has worked so hard for a number of years, so it is great to see him receive all the praise that he deserves."
Hammond also batted down seven passes, blocked two PAT's, and recovered two onside kicks.
Added Dabbs: "He is a great leader both on the field and off the field in our hallways and community. He is an All-State Player this year, but he has been an All-State Person for our MV Community for several years!"
